Educated: St John's C.of E. School, Coleford, 1938-1943; Monmouth School, 1943-1951

National Service: Royal Air Force, 1951-1953; Pilot Training; Secretarial Branch; then reserve service in Fighter Control Section of Oxford University Air Squadron, 1953-1957. Flying Officer.

University: Lincoln College, Oxford - Final Honours School of Natural Science (Chemistry), 1956, Part II Thesis in Chemical Crystallography, 1957 - 2nd Class Honours (BA, became MA in due course).

Married: Dorothy Lockwood, 22nd July 1958

Children: Jonathan, born 1965, married Jenny Thorne 2002, and Christina, born 1967, married Peregrine Gauci, 1996
